Read Write Inc Phonics
At Rotherfield School, our intent is to develop the essential life skill of reading to enable our children to become lifelong readers. We aim to foster a love of reading and enrich children’s lives through high quality texts. By building confident readers we are offering opportunity to develop their across the wider curriculum.
At Rotherfield we use Read Write Inc Phonics (RWI) to give your child the best possible start with their literacy. Click on the image below to open the Presentation that was shared in our Phonics Workshop in November this year. This will give you more information about what RWI is and how it is taught here at Rotherfield.

Phonics in School
We follow a 'stage not age' approach to teaching phonics where the children are grouped in school by their phonetic knowledge. When first starting, children will learn the Set 1 sounds before progressing onto the Set 2 & Set 3 sounds in their lessons.
Click the button below to see a list of the sounds children are taught in school.
How can I help my child at home?
- Ensure you model the sounds correctly to your child. The video below will help you with how to say the sounds correctly.
- Play phonics games with your child at home to support their learning in school (there are some good suggestions in the PowerPoint linked above).
- Read frequently with your child at home. This needs to be a mixture of the phonetically decodable books that are provided by school but also you as a parent reading and sharing stories with your child. You can also read words in your environment such as road signs and packaging, can you spot any of the sounds they have been learning in school recently?
- Take a look at the practice sheets linked below.
