Curriculum
This term, Franklin class' topic focus is 'Invasions and Eruptions'. We will be using 'Escape for Pompeii' by Christina Balit as our key text, which is a work of fiction based on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79, and the subsequent destruction of the Roman city of Pompeii. Our history learning will focus on the Roman Empire and their invasion of and impact upon Britain, including the opportunity to make our own Roman shields and test them in a beanbag attack! The geography element of this term will look at how volcanoes are formed and where they are most prevalent in the world, thinking about tectonic plates and what is underneath them. Towards the end of the term, we will design and make our own modroc volcanoes, then conduct some scientific experiments to choose materials best suited to creating an explosion, ready to create volcanic eruptions on the playground!

Useful Information
Spelling homework is set on a Friday, to be tested the following Friday. Times tables are worked on regularly during the week at school, and we would encourage lots of practise at home, ideally through use of Times Tables Rockstars. Fluency and speed of recollection of multiplication and division facts are absolutely key to mathematical success throughout Key Stage 2
We expect that reading records are brought into school every day - Mrs Blackwell will check these each morning for messages and to check that the children are changing their own books when needed. Once your child has moved beyond the colour banded books, they are free to choose their own reading material either from the library at school or from home. The children will have weekly lessons focussing on reading comprehension skills, with those who need extra support reading frequently 1:1 with an adult. The current reading challenge is stuck into your child's reading record, so that you can tick off and date the tasks that they have completed.
Websites
These are some of the most useful websites we use in class. Please explore them with your child, as they contain lots of useful learning opportunities and include some well-loved games!
