With the support of all their parents, the boys played some fantastic football, so much so that they did not lose a single game ! This meant that they reached the final of the group games where they just missed out on going through to the next round. What an awesome achievement from the boys - Edward, Oli, Luke, Rupert, Archie, George, Josh and Ethan, you should be so proud of yourselves ! This is the furthest and most successful that Rotherfield Primary has ever done in this competition and I am so grateful that I have had the privilege to be part of this with you all. He held the entire school captive for 50 minutes sharing the story of how he turned his life around to become the worlds fittest man and then scouted to become a Gladiator. He shared with the children how important healthy eating, drinking water, a positive attitude and developing good emotional health is; giving the children a range of techniques to support themselves. He gave us a demonstration of walking handstands, patiently answered a range of questions and then visited all the classes to sign postcards, hand out water bottles and answer yet more questions. Steel introduced the concept of ’Glimmer Jars’, a place where children can write down a positive idea or memory from their day and then review these over time as a reminder of all the great things they have done or achieved. Every child added a glimmer to Steel’s own jar for him to take away and read. We had an amazing time and the result was even better- we came 2nd out of 5 teams, narrowly missing out on coming first. We won 4 out of our 5 matches with the scores being: 4 - 0, 10 -0, 3 - 0 and 2 - 0. We now go through to the finals at Uckfield college on the 30th November. We all enjoyed it very much. The team played valiantly and the substitutes cheered everyone on. At the end of every match the team showed great sportsmanship by shaking hands and giving three cheers to the opponents. We played 4 matches; we won one, lost two and we drew one. The players were: Robert, and he played amazingly on the right wing and in defence. Then there was Henry, he scored the first goal of the tournament, he played great in midfield, defence and incredibly in goal. Then there was Thomas, and he played amazingly, making many great saves and incredible shots and runs. There was also Hugh, he played well, and did some very long throws, as well as one assist. The children took part in an informative session where they examined the build-up to the momentous Battle of Hastings. They beheld the spot where Harold Godwinson had fallen and, bearing Norman or Anglo-Saxon shields, re-enacted the battle of 1066. The children enjoyed climbing the steep, stone steps up to the Great Gatehouse and were immersed in a variety of interactive experiences in the exhibition centre and cinema room. We have been working closely with Tracy Lewis from Beacon Academy to develop our PE curriculum and increase the competitive sporting opportunities for our children. Throughout the year we have taken children to 12 inter-school competitions and events including KS1 multiskills events, cross country, football, netball and tag rugby. We have shown a commitment to ensuring children receive a minimum of two hours of high-quality PE in school and have delivered a variety of extra-curricular sporting opportunities through after school clubs including KS1 football, KS2 striking and fielding and netball. It has been lovely to engage with the local school games cluster again after a few years of being unable to do so due to the COVID lockdowns and we are looking forward to developing this next academic year.
